Posted by Tamsin on 16th Sep 2024
At Click N Drink, we love celebrating all things cocktails, and Negroni Week is one of our favourite times of the year! Every September, cocktail enthusiasts, bartenders, and drink lovers come together to honour one of the most iconic cocktails in history: the Negroni. It’s a week dedicated not only to enjoying this classic drink but also to supporting charitable causes worldwide. Whether you’re new to the Negroni or a seasoned fan, here’s everything you need to know about this special celebration, including its history, recipe, and purpose.
The History of the Negroni
The Negroni has a long and storied history dating back to 1919 in Florence, Italy. Legend has it that Count Camillo Negroni, seeking a stronger version of his favourite cocktail, the Americano (a mix of Campari, sweet vermouth, and soda water), asked his bartender to swap out the soda water for gin. The result was the bold and balanced Negroni we know today. With its perfect combination of bitter, sweet, and herbal flavours, the Negroni quickly gained popularity and became a staple in cocktail bars around the world.
Over the years, variations of the classic recipe have emerged, but the original remains a favourite for its simplicity and elegance.
The Classic Negroni Recipe
If you want to experience the timeless flavour of a Negroni, here's how you can make one at home with ingredients available from Click N Drink:
25ml Gin
25ml Campari
25ml Sweet Vermouth
Instructions:
Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass filled with ice.
Stir well until chilled.
Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
Garnish with an orange peel, expressing the oils over the top for added aroma.
It’s that simple! The beauty of the Negroni lies in its balance—each ingredient plays a crucial role, creating a drink that’s bitter, slightly sweet, and beautifully aromatic.
What is Negroni Week?
Started in 2013 by Imbibe Magazine and Campari, Negroni Week is more than just an excuse to enjoy a classic cocktail. It’s a global initiative that brings bartenders, restaurants, and drinkers together for a charitable cause. Each participating venue selects a charity and donates a portion of the proceeds from Negroni sales during the week. Since its inception, Negroni Week has raised millions of pounds for hundreds of charities around the world.
For us at Click N Drink, Negroni Week is the perfect opportunity to give back while celebrating the craftsmanship of cocktail culture. Whether you’re mixing up a Negroni at home or heading to a participating bar, you can feel good knowing that your drink is making a difference.
